The AWP Dragon Lore Story: How CS2 Got Its Grail

The AWP Dragon Lore is the most famous skin in Counter-Strike and the benchmark grail every other expensive skin is measured against. A plain Factory New trades around $8,000–14,000 in 2026, but the finish's real story is in its rarest forms — the pro-signed Souvenir copies that have sold for more than $400,000. This file is the history of how a green-and-gold AWP became the game's icon.
The Dragon Lore first appeared in 2014 in the Cobblestone Collection, obtainable only by unboxing the collection or, far more rarely, as a Souvenir from Major matches on Cobblestone. It is rare by supply and iconic by design, and that combination is why it anchors the top of the most expensive CS2 skins board.
2014–2015: the finish that set the template
The Dragon Lore arrived as a Covert AWP in the Cobblestone Collection, and its scarcity was obvious immediately — the collection was hard to farm and the drop rate punishing. In 2015 a Factory New copy reportedly sold for around $61,000 in a private deal, a number so far beyond anything else at the time that it effectively invented the idea of a five-figure skin. Every grail sale since has been measured against it.
The design did the rest. Where most 2014 skins were bright camos or simple hydro-dips, the Dragon Lore wrapped an ornate green-and-gold dragon down the length of the rifle, and it read as expensive before anyone knew the price. That combination — genuinely low supply plus a look people wanted on sight — is the template every later grail has tried to copy, and few have matched.

Why the Souvenir version is the real grail
A normal Dragon Lore is rare; a Souvenir Dragon Lore is almost mythical. Souvenir copies dropped only to viewers and attendees of Major matches played on Cobblestone, arriving with four gold tournament stickers already applied. When Cobblestone left the Active Duty map pool in 2018, the supply froze at an estimated 12 to 15 Factory New copies. Add a signature from a legend of the game and you have the $400,000-plus sales that define the category — covered in full in the souvenir Dragon Lore record.
Where the Dragon Lore sits among the grails
The Dragon Lore is the most iconic AWP, but not the only expensive one. The Gungnir and Medusa, from the Norse and Gods and Monsters lines, trade in the five figures and are arguably rarer, while the Dragon Lore wins on fame and demand. That gap — between the rarest AWP and the most wanted AWP — is a useful lesson: the Dragon Lore's price is as much about being the icon as about being scarce.
The Gungnir is the clearest example. It came from the Norse Collection, which was never sold as keyed cases in the usual way, so its supply is genuinely tiny — smaller than the Dragon Lore's — yet it trades at a comparable or lower headline because fewer players grew up dreaming about it. The Medusa and the older Fade round out the five-figure AWP tier. If you want the rarest AWP rather than the most famous, the Gungnir is arguably the better claim, which is exactly the sort of distinction a record book exists to draw.

The Dragon Lore in CS2 today
When Counter-Strike 2 replaced CS:GO in 2023, every inventory carried over, so the Dragon Lore population and its aura came with it — and the new lighting engine, if anything, flattered the finish. In 2026 a normal Factory New trades roughly $8,000–14,000, a Minimal Wear a step below, and Field-Tested copies come down into the mid four figures, which is the most accessible way most collectors ever own one. StatTrak Factory New copies sit well above the normal range.
The wear ladder matters more here than on most skins because the Dragon Lore's gold detailing dulls visibly as float rises, so collectors pay a steep premium for low-float copies and a further one for the increasingly rare StatTrak. A well-known low-float Factory New with the right stickers can trade at a large multiple of a plain Field-Tested, which is why quoting “the price of a Dragon Lore” without the wear, the StatTrak status and the stickers is close to meaningless.
The finish also anchors the top of the market emotionally, not just financially. When people argue about the most expensive CS2 skins, the Dragon Lore is the reference point they reach for even though blue-gem AKs and Katowice stickers have long since eclipsed it on price. It is the skin that taught the community a video-game cosmetic could be worth a car.
Reading a Dragon Lore price
Because the Dragon Lore spans such a wide range — a worn plain copy at four figures, a Factory New at five, a signed Souvenir at six — a headline number is meaningless without three details: the exact wear, whether it is a normal or Souvenir copy, and which stickers if any are applied. A “Dragon Lore sold for $400,000” story is almost always a signed Souvenir, not the skin most people picture. For the full taxonomy of what makes CS2 skins rare, see the rarest CS2 skins.
One more caution specific to this finish: its fame makes it a favourite of scammers and of sellers quoting old, inflated numbers. A price from the 2021 bull run or a screenshot of a private “offer” is not today's market, and a Souvenir figure attached to a picture of a normal copy is a bait. Cross-check the exact item, the wear, the stickers and the date before you believe any Dragon Lore number, including the ones on this page — which is why every figure here carries the day we checked it. The souvenir version, the one that actually clears $400,000, gets its own file in the souvenir Dragon Lore record.
